 10th Annual

Crystal Apple Awards® Banquet Recap

"Business Recognizing EXCELLENCE in Education"

Every seat on the main floor was full at the Historic Elsinore Theatre as over 925 educators, business people, community members and volunteers who attended 10th Annual Crystal Apple Awards® on November 16.  Event attendees found themselves touched and overwhelmed by the many stories of teachers, classified staff personnel and administrators who have gone above and beyond their jobs to educate and influence our students in a positive way.

Nominees flowed down a red carpet in front of the Historic Elsinore Theatre past Crystal Image Photography’s flashing paparazzi cameras and to the Chamber’s “Live from the Red Carpet!” hosts, Patti Woods and Brent DeHart.  Their walk was broadcast live inside the theater.

Chamber President Ross Carey welcomed the group and introduced the highly energetic entertainment for the evening, YouTube™ sensation and inspirational speaker, Judson Laipply.  The CAA Team was pleased to be able to attract Laipply to Salem.  He recently appeared on The Today Show, Good Morning America, Inside Edition, Ellen, Video City, and E! and is the creator of “The Evolution of Dance.”  Laipply treated the attendees to a wonderful, uplifting performance.

Amanda Fleer of Western Oregon University was also honored by two former Crystal Apple recipients who were also WOU graduates and her University with a $2,400 scholarship.  Fifty three outstanding educators were nominated and twelve received a Crystal Apple Award.  All were deeply deserving of such an honor.

Crystal Apple Team members and volunteers went into the worksites to honor nominees personally in front of students or colleagues.  Said recipient Jim Henry of West Salem High School and now Crossler Middle School, “Today was one of the BEST days I have had since I started this job 5 years ago! I was given a fantastic gift basket, pictures, and even a box of donuts  BUT the real big thing was the nod of approval from my peers!  That was priceless!  Thank you so much.

Beautiful Crystal Apple Awards were handed out to recipients by Executive Director, Mike McLaran, Salem-Keizer Education Foundation President, Chuck Swank and Superintendent, Sandra Husk.  They were joined by sponsor representatives, Brad Moore from AmeriTitle, Marlene Wellin from Coldwell Banker Mountain West and Jeff Lang of Washington Mutual Bank.  Special thanks were given to CAA Team Chair, Mike DeRochier of AmeriTitle.

The financial support from many local businesses and individuals made it possible for the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, the Salem Keizer Education Foundation and the Salem Keizer Public Schools to be able to bring such a terrific group of people together to recognize excellence in education.
