City of Salem

Streets/Bridges Bond

Let's Keep Salem Moving!

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce is spearheading the effort to ensure our City’s streets and bridges are safe and reliable for businesses and community residents. Broad-based support for citizens throughout the City of Salem is necessary to keep our transportation infrastructure intact.

The Problem
The capacity of Salem’s streets and bridges is being stretched “to the max” as our transportation network ages.  Our key facilities are in poor condition and the most critical needs must be addressed soon to ensure the efficient and safe movement of commerce.

Funding the Most Urgent Needs
Knowing there won’t be enough money to take care of all these needs, Salem’s leaders have identified projects to address only the most urgent needs pinpointed by citizens.  Priority projects are planned for every area of the city to:

  • Relieve Traffic Congestion

  • Reconstruct failing bridges and street pavement

  • Improve Safety

·         Keep Salem Moving
To tackle these problems, the City of Salem is proposing a multi-year transportation initiative and $99.8 million funding package.  The funding must be approved by voters, with funds provided through voter-backed general obligation bonds. If passed, the bond would add approximately $64 to the property tax bill of a home valued at $200,000 or .32 cents per $1,000 assessed value.

Accountability
It has been 13 years since Salem voters last passed a bond measure to maintain our transportation infrastructure. Similar bond measures for bridges and streets passed in 1992 and 1995.  Salem’s Department of Public Works completed every one of the promised projects on-time and under budget. That enabled the City of Salem to complete many more projects than initially promised.
