City officials laid out their versions of action plans for the West Salem Business District and the North Gateway Urban Renewal Area (Portland Road Corridor) at the Public Policy session held July 2nd.

The goal of the West Salem Business District Action Plan is to bring opportunities for redevelopment and encourage private investments, while investing in the infrastructure needed to support those improvements.  Some of the infrastructure components include ways to connect different areas of West Salem, such as a 2nd Street extension and grade-separated undercrossing of Wallace Road. The infrastructure changes hope to improve local traffic and in turn attract investments. It was emphasized that these improvements do not replace the need for an additional bridge over the Willamette River. To review the full plan, go to https://www.cityofsalem.net/westsalemplan.

The North Gateway Urban Renewal Area (URA) also hopes to attract private investment and jobs, as well as fund public improvements. The plan has been in place since 2000, and so far, completed projects include Portland Road, Bill Frey Drive, Blossom Avenue and Hollywood Station. The City now has $21 million left, and is now looking to prioritize projects. To review the full plan, go to https://www.cityofsalem.net/northgatewayplan

Mayor Peterson encouraged those in attendance to apply for open positions on City boards and committees, like the North Gateway Redevelopment Advisory Board, emphasizing the importance of local business perspectives.
