Salem, OR) Oct. 3, 2019 – In a generation with access to every type of music, traditional American styles like blues and jazz are often overlooked and underappreciated. The nonprofit, Keeping the Arts, is passionate about introducing youth to musical genres that are distinctly American. This will be accomplished through the American Roots Music Festival (ARMF) on Saturday, Nov. 2, at The Tabernacle in Turner, Oregon.
The festival attracts celebrities who generously commit time to work with students to expose them to the country’s musical roots. It also includes a free, educational, youth concert titled the “History of the Fiddle in American Roots Music.”
Festival performers include Mary Flower (blues), Lauren Sheehan (Americana), Fern Hill (bluegrass), and others. The headliner band, The Western Flyers, will take the stage at 6:30 p.m. They have won Western Swing Album of the Year awards from both the Western Music Association and the Academy of Western Artists.
The festival includes jam sessions, workshops, and a free youth concert, which will kick off the day at 9:30 a.m. The full agenda can be accessed at americanrootsmusicfestival.com.
Keeping the Arts Board Member, Hal Weiner, says that their organization’s primary goal is to ensure that the arts and music remain an integral part of education for youth in K-12 Oregon schools.
“The festival is one of the ways we can inspire young people to pursue their passion for music while raising funds to continue our mission,” Weiner said. “Arts and music should be a critical component of youth education across Oregon.” Keeping the Arts has provided over $155,000 in grants to youth arts and music programs throughout Oregon including more than $50,000 to local area schools.

The American Music Roots Festival, which originally ran from 2004-2009, is a fundraiser event put on by Keeping the Arts.
