Chemeketa Receives over $3 Million in Grants
Funding to support services for student parents, student retention, advising and completion
Salem, Ore., Oct. 4, 2018 — Chemeketa Community College has received two new and significant U.S. Department of Education grants totaling over $3 million in support of students.
The first grant is through its Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS). The CCAMPIS program helps Pell Grant-eligible parents attain a post-secondary education with the support of campus-based childcare services, such as Chemeketa’s Child Development Center. The grant totals $645,788 and will be awarded $161,447 annually over four years.
The second grant is a five-year Title V Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program (DHSI) grant totaling $2,409,453 with $525,000 being awarded in the first year. The Title V DHSI program provides grants to eligible colleges and universities to improve and expand their capacity to serve Hispanic and low-income students. Chemeketa’s Accelerated Pathways to Success (CAPS) project will support student retention and graduation through proactive coaching and advising.
“The award of these two grants will have a direct impact on students and their success,” Chemeketa president, Julie Huckestein said. “These grant dollars will increase the support systems available to students and will improve student success and completion. We are extremely grateful to Senators Merkley and Wyden for their advocacy in obtaining the HSI grant and everyone who worked tirelessly to bring these dollars in to support Chemeketa students. This is a significant investment in our students and the Chemeketa community.”
