Starting From Scratch
The Konditorei opened it’s doors on June 24th, 1982 by Gerry Frank and Barney Rogers. Selling gourmet cakes along with a small food menu, their popularity led to the growth of the lengthy cake list. In 1986, quiche made from scratch every morning was added to the menu added.
Doreen Hellman, the original baker from Lovin’ Oven, created the first cake recipes. In 1991, Mike and Valerie Schultz bought the Lovin’ Oven and started baking for the Konditorei. Today, they bake the majority of our desserts along with a couple other local bakers.
Changing Ownership
Linae Sielicky started working at the Konditorei September 1, 1988 as an assistant manager, and then graduated to manager in 2009.
When Gerry decided to sell the Konditorei at the age of 94, Sielicky along with the Schultz’s from the Lovin’ Oven bought the establishment July 7, 2017. Along with wonderful staff, they will continue the tradition of the Konditorei for years to come.
Sielicky said, “The Konditorei has been a fixture of the Salem community for the last 30+ years, and over those decades we have become a place of celebration where people can make memories that last a lifetime.”
Upcoming changes
After its long years in it’s location on 310 Kearney St, the Konditorei will be expanding the dining room next year. They hope to create a more efficient line and more seating to reduce wait time for loyal guests and newcomers alike.
What does the Konditorei want Salem to know? “Thank you for your decades of support. We are thankful to have become a staple in Salem, and to have been a part of creating memories for so many families and individuals. One of my favorite things to hear is people’s stories about coming into the Konditorei for a slice of cake on special occasions through the years,” Sielicky said.
