The McLaran Leadership Foundation
The McLaran Leadership Foundation is the nonprofit leadership-development arm of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, serving Salem, Oregon and the surrounding region. Established to invest in people at every stage of leadership, the Foundation brings together students, emerging professionals, and experienced leaders to build skills, broaden perspectives, and inspire civic engagement.
As a 501(c)(3) organization, the McLaran Leadership Foundation exists to ensure the long-term vitality of the Salem community by preparing individuals to step into meaningful leadership roles across business, nonprofit, education, and public service.
Our Mission
To develop the leadership potential of Salem-area students and business professionals through educational programs and events that help them thrive and become contributing community members.
This mission guides every program, partnership, and experience offered through the Foundation.
Our Leadership Programs
Leadership Salem
Leadership Salem is the Foundation’s flagship, cohort-based leadership program designed for motivated professionals who want to deepen their understanding of the Salem community and expand their leadership capacity.
Participants take part in an immersive, multi-month experience that includes:
- Monthly sessions exploring key community issues, systems, and opportunities
- Direct access to business, nonprofit, and civic leaders
- Skill-building focused on effective, values-driven leadership
- Meaningful relationship-building with peers across industries
- A capstone community project that applies learning to real-world impact
Leadership Salem prepares participants to step confidently into board service, executive leadership, and influential roles that shape the region’s future.
Salem Emerging Leaders
Salem Emerging Leaders is designed specifically for young professionals, typically ages 20–40, who are beginning to grow their own professional expertise, leadership voice, and community engagement.
The program offers:
- Ongoing monthly and quarterly professional-development events
- Leadership training paired with social connection opportunities
- Exposure to community needs, industry leaders, and thriving organizations
Salem Emerging Leaders creates space for connection, growth, and learning—helping participants build confidence, networks, and a strong sense of belonging in the Salem community.
Youth Leadership Project
The Youth Leadership Project expands leadership development to the next generation by engaging students in hands-on learning and community involvement.
Through this program, students:
- Explore leadership strengths and career interests
- Learn practical skills such as communication, teamwork, and civic responsibility
- Gain exposure to local organizations, businesses, and leaders
- Build confidence as active contributors to their community
By investing early, the Youth Leadership Project helps cultivate future leaders who are prepared to serve, collaborate, and lead with purpose.
