Local wealth advisor, Salem Rotary Foundation Board Member, and youth baseball umpire Barry Nelson will be honored with a Distinguished Service Award at the First Citizen Awards Banquet on Saturday, April 13.
On Wednesday (March 20), we surprised Barry at his office during a Salem Rotary Foundation Board of Directors meeting with the news of his recognition. Join us at the First Citizen Awards Banquet to see the surprise on video!
Along with providing exceptional financial services to his clients at Capital Financial Planners (where he is part-owner), Barry Nelson is a dedicated servant leader and community volunteer.
As a past president and current foundation board member with the Rotary Club of Salem, Barry has committed countless hours to better our community, including taking on operational responsibility with Ken Van Osdol of the Gerry Frank | Salem Rotary Amphitheater project, which was completed in 2021 at Salem’s Riverfront Park. A premier venue for outdoor events and a beautiful gathering space for community members, this new Salem landmark’s construction took years of planning in collaboration with the City of Salem, architects, contractors, fundraisers, and a project task force. Barry and Ken’s volunteer efforts in bringing this massive and impressive project together earned them recognition with the City’s Vern Miller Key Resident Award in 2022.
Remarkably, Barry’s volunteer achievements have extended beyond our community. A youth baseball umpire for many years here in the Salem area, Barry was selected to serve in the 2023 Little League World Series in Taylor, Michigan, representing officials in the sport as one of only two from the state of Oregon that year.
In living the Rotary Club’s motto, ‘Service Above Self,’ Barry shows us what we can accomplish as a community when we share our time and talents. When he’s not in the office helping clients, serving the community in his role with Rotary, supporting youth on the baseball diamond, or spending time with his wife Heather and two sons, Barry can be seen and heard lending his vocal talents to the choir at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
