Oregon State Credit Union will hold a free shred day in Keizer from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, on the parking lot of Volcanoes Stadium, 6700 Field of Dreams Way NE in Keizer.
Personnel from the Keizer Police Department will be there to support the event and help educate the public about combating identity theft. The Marion-Polk Food Share will also be there accepting voluntary donations of non-perishable food or cash to help combat hunger in Marion and Polk counties.
Shred Day is free and open to the public. Oregon State Credit Union will accept up to three boxes per car for shredding. Items that can be shredded include old checks or outdated papers with personal information on them, such as tax forms, bank and credit union statements, contracts, bills, pay stubs, utility bills and medical bills. Documents will be securely shredded onsite.
The event is set up as a “drive-through” event, meaning cars will drive up to the shred trucks and credit union employees will remove the shred and place it into the shred bins. There is no need to get out of the car. The event is open to all; participants do not need to be credit union members.
Properly disposing of personal documents is one way for people to protect themselves from identity theft. The Federal Trade Commission recommends shredding sensitive documents such as charge receipts, old utility bills, copies of credit applications, insurance forms, physician statements, unused checks, bank statements and expired credit, debit and ATM cards.
