On Thursday, January 11 at 4:30pm, Salem-Keizer Education Foundation and their storefront Where the Sidewalk Begins will hold their grand opening and ribbon cutting in their new home; the newly renovated Starkey-McCully Building.

Located in Salem’s historic downtown core, the Starkey-McCully building has been a cornerstone in the community since it was built in 1867 to serve as a general merchandise store. Over the years the building served as home to a variety of other businesses until it became vacant and neglected.

In 2014, the Salem-Keizer Education Foundation purchased the building located at 223 Commercial St NE, and began to restore this historic gem to establish the region’s first college and career readiness center. Named in memory of a community leader who saw the value of intertwining the education and business communities, the Mike McLaran Center for Student Success serves as a one-stop community resource for tutoring, college and career readiness, adult education, and employment and job skills training.
